The 2019 Oscar winners and my ballot results

The Academy awards are over for another year! It was a smooth running ceremony this year despite being host-less (which turned out to be a great change of pace) and I enjoyed watching the telecast live from the UK even though it ran until 4:15AM. I powered through.

As always there were plenty of surprises and upsets to keep film twitter outraged throughout the night. The internet loves to jump on the bandwagon of undeserved wins or steamy love ballads (I’m looking at you Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for Shallow, what a gorgeous performance!)

2019 saw the predictable safe Oscar-bait movie Green Book take home best picture. A win which I neither predicted nor appreciated. Roma, having won three other categories in best director, best cinematography and best foreign film I was certain would be the victor of the night. How very wrong I was. Seems like the preferential ballot voting system has struck again.

Bohemian Rhapsody, the other safe and boring choice of the night took home a total of four wins. Rami Malek for best actor had always been a sure thing but Bohemian also sneaked through with best editing, best sound editing and best sound mixing.

Black Panther thankfully brought some great wins home and made history in the process. Ruth E Carter won for best costume design, becoming the first African American woman to win in the category. Black Panther also won for best production design and best score.

See below for the full list of winners.
